Regular readers of this blog may remember a post about my encounter with two desert tortoises on Blackett's Ridge Trail (July 10, 2014). At that time, one tortoise slipped under a rock overhang along the trail. On Dec. 23 as I walked up Blackett's again I recognized that shallow rock cove and looked in thinking I may see a desert tortoise. Instead I found this beautiful Gila monster. Notice the large bulge near its hindquarters. Did the monster eat my tortoise? Hard to imagine that. I've sent the photo to a lizard expert and asked if the bulge is part of the digestive process. I’ll keep you posted on the reply.
