The beautiful
American Snout butterfly uses both species of hackberry in the canyon as a host plant. The females lay their eggs on the leaves, and the caterpillars bulk up on them after hatching.
Desert Hackberry (
Celtis pallida) and
Net-leaf Hackberry (
Celtis reticulata).
